Passionate about using technology to end the use of fossil fuels in an economically rational way. Entrepreneur, investor and founder of Meson Capital Partners. Has served on the board of directors for five public companies. Master of Engineering degree in Operations Research & Information from Cornell University.

CrossFit, reading, and fast cars. Former champion rower and road cyclist. Grew up in Toronto where, at age 11, he learned about nuclear fusion from the PBS show “The Voyage of the Mimi” and realized it was possible to create limitless clean energy that could change the world. Then he read Warren Buffet to learn the business of resource allocation that makes change possible. At 11.

Founding Partner, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Inspired by the infinite potential of the world’s most efficient electric motor. Hands-on technology strategist with diverse leadership experience in American, European and Asian markets. Bachelor and Master of Physics degrees from the University of Auckland.

Loves gardening, vacationing in Mauna Kea, and sushi. A born entrepreneur who started his first company in the early ‘80s developing payroll and accounting software for the first PCs. (Genius!) Started five more companies before SMC, which he counts as his most exciting venture yet.

Director, People Operations

Previously worked at a company providing HR and accounting services to startups, leading teams that served up to 40 different clients at a time. Happy to be channeling her energy into a company with a tangible product that can make a real global impact on energy use. Bachelor of Arts degree in Feminist Studies from Stanford University.

JAY GARDNER

Former professional water polo player. While her parents signed her up for the swim team as a three-year-old, she soon found playing water polo to be much more fun than swimming laps. She played competitively from middle school through college, and then moved to Greece to play professionally. Back home in the Bay Area, she enjoys combining family time and baking.

DAVID MILES

Vice President of Operations

Makes great ideas happen. Early career: helped develop the world’s first brain scanners as a design engineer. Honed Jack Welch-style project management skills while working at a GE acquisition. Degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Science and Higher Math from Slough College of Higher Education.

DAVID MILES

Personal file

Grew up in the United Kingdom. His college experience included an apprenticeship with Nobel Prize winner Godfrey Hounsfield at EMI Laboratories. Once an avid skier, he would love to return to the slopes of Chamonix, France one day. Currently, he prefers spending free time with his wife and four kids—three daughters and a son.

Vice President of Motor Design

He’s the guy, the original inventor of the SMC patented motor technology. Motivated by the tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment. An innovator and technical expert with an entrepreneurial mindset. PhD and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology.

Guiding principle: “I’d rather fail miserably at trying to do something spectacular than be fantastically successful at something mediocre.” Math and physics came naturally to him as a child. He learned to work with his hands by fixing things around the house with his father. Avid reader of philosophy and fiction, favoring stories about the triumph of the human spirit.

PAUL WICKBERG

Senior Vice President of Sales

Totally enthused about bringing new technology to an industry that hasn’t experienced a radical shift in decades. His career has been a commitment to reducing buildings’ energy use through HVACR and commercial controls, working for start-ups and established industry leaders. Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.

PAUL WICKBERG

Personal file

Works remotely from Florida. Believes in being prepared: wearing a T-shirt and flip-flops speeds up the transition from work to his fishing boat. Started a bait and tackle shop when he was 15, selling bait to fishermen in the morning before school. Held the largest paper delivery route in Northwest Indiana at age 14, outsourcing delivery to other kids.

Vice President of Engineering

Experienced in product development planning, scaling products to volume production, and organizational development. Has some well-known product development successes on his resume. (Amazon Echo™, FORCE BAND™) Holds two patents. Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara.

One of those kids who always loved taking things apart to see how they worked. Fixed his mom’s dryer as an eight-year-old. Working on a large electrical machine at SMC is his dream come true. Appreciates the honest, no-bull work environment. Avid deep-sea fisherman, a pursuer of salmon, halibut, lingcod and rockfish.

Vice President of Strategic Products

Inspired by the mission and opportunity to potentially help reverse the impact of climate change, while shaping the future of human/AI collaboration. Met Ryan and learned about SMC at a futurist tech think tank and was intrigued. Joined the team officially in 2018. Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal and MIT; MIT Engineering Fellow.

Loves solving hard problems. Fascinated by how things work. From machines to outer space, he wants to know how all the parts work together as a cohesive system. A math whiz who was removed from his high school pre-calc class for destroying the curve. Plays Spanish guitar. Values authenticity, integrity, and truth. Family time means everything.

Chief Technical Officer

High-energy with credentials proving he knows how to get things done. 25+ years leading computer hardware design and development: system design, product development, research analysis and management. Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of West Indies.

Biking and floating on his back in the ocean (sharks be damned!). Fascinated by electrical things since he was a tiny kid. Built a Class A power amp at age 14. Loves long to-do lists. Can’t live without Post-it™ notes. Thrives on the challenges of machine design. Driven, decisive, analytical, and described by coworkers as “a pretty great guy.”

Director of Software

While his career has taken several interesting turns, SMC fits with his personal mission to focus his abilities on solving the world’s toughest problems. Previous ventures ranged from an online marketplace for secondhand apparel (acquired by eBay) to founding a mobile gaming studio. Dual degrees in Computer Science and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

FREDERICO NUSYMOWICZ

Loves his fiancé, dog, and boxing. Has been programming since he was a kid when he helped his entrepreneur dad scrape a database of thousands of potential customers, which was instrumental in helping his family move from Argentina to the U.S. This long-time gamer goes low-tech to play board games with SMC co-workers.
